Positive Reviews
positive:
Clean and comfy dorms
Guests are complimentary about the standard of the dorms at the Baxter, often describing them as warm, comfy and clean. The extra touches such as the individual power socket and light are appreciated. The only slight negative is that some guests mention it was tricky getting into the higher bunks.
positive:
Nice breakfast
The free breakfast goes down a treat with guests and, while fairly basic, is more than the tea and toast offered at some hostels. Guests mention that the staff prepare freshly cooked scrambled eggs upon your arrival in the kitchen and also note that tea and coffee are available all day.
positive:
Well located
The location of the Baxter is a particular highlight. You'll be able to walk to the popular Princes Street in just a few minutes and there are plenty of local transport spots (buses and trains) to help you explore further afield.
Negative Reviews
negative:
Some extra costs
Although guests tend to be of the opinion that the hostel offers good value for money, those on a very tight budget should be aware that some extra costs for a padlock and towel hire are likely. Plus, if you want to leave luggage for a while after check-out, there is a small hourly charge per bag.
negative:
No private rooms available
Whereas some hostels offer private single and double rooms, there are no private rooms available at the Baxter. The nearest option is the four-bed dorm which is okay for a small group but means a couple wanting privacy will pay double.
negative:
Limited bathroom facilities
Guests mention that there are only four showers in the property, one of which appears to be regularly broken. This can lead to some queues and delays in the morning. Also, guests comment that there should be more toilets.
