The Royal Mackintosh Hotel is a lovely base in the seaside town of Dunbar to explore the East Lothian coastline. The 16 en-suite rooms have large beds, tea and coffee making facilities and TV with DVD player. There is also a “pet-friendly” room available. The Royal Mackintosh Hotel offers a limited amount of free parking spaces and free Wi-Fi in public places. Full Scottish breakfasts are served in the splendid setting of the Mauretania restaurant each morning. The restaurant is decked in wood from an ocean liner ship bearing the same name and serves meals sourced from fine local produce. Guests can also eat in the adjoining bar and wash down their meal with some fine wine or real ale. The hotel is just minutes from Dunbar's railway station and the town centre. There are also many fine golf courses in the region.
Though most guests seemed to have access to their own car, they nonetheless appreciated that the hotel was very central, with the castle, railway station and all the amenities of the town centre all well within walking distance of the hotel.
It was relatively hard to find a bad word written about the breakfast. Most guests seemed to appreciate the combination of cereals and cooked items, saying that it set them up for the day.
Whatever small issues guests had with their rooms here and there, most went on to add that they felt the room-rate was very reasonable. Combined with the fantastic central location in Dunbar, most reckoned that they received very good value for money indeed.
This was perhaps the most common criticism. Many guests felt that, while the rooms did function just as they should, the décor looked very dated. Most seemed to feel that the hotel had put off renovating for too long and would need to do so soon in order to remain relevant.
A few guests mentioned that the hotel was a bit of a noisy environment. The on-site bar seemed to get most of the blame, with guests saying that the revelry there could cause them some disturbance if they were trying to have an early night.
Though not often mentioned, a few motorists did seem to have problems with the parking area. They mentioned that it was very small in general, making it hard to manoeuvre and get in your spot and also that there were simply not enough spots for the number of guests.
