This boutique-style hotel in a collection of colonial-era townhouses is set in the lively Kampong Glam district, around two miles from the city centre. Along with its heritage charm, The Sultan wins plaudits for its handy location and friendly staff. Compact rooms with wood floors provide flat-screen TVs and iPod docking stations, as well as mini-fridges and tea/coffee-making facilities. Some rooms feature timber beams and/or separate seating areas. Split-level suites with loft bedrooms are also available. There is a relaxed lounge area as well as a modest outdoor terrace. Internet access is available throughout. Along with a breakfast buffet, European and local cuisine is served in the chic Classified Cafe. There’s also a laid-back bar (FRESH!) with a late ‘90s vibe, and a cool jazz lounge called The SingJazz Club. The Sultan is a seven-minute walk from the nearest metro station and two miles from the Singapore Flyer observation wheel.
As well as being close to the beautiful Sultan Mosque and the wonderful markets and food options on lively Arab Street, this hotel is also ideally placed to enjoy live performances showcased at the nearby Malaysian Heritage Center. Throw in the fact you have Little India just around the corner and the nearest bus and metro stations are an easy walk away and you can see why, in geographical terms at least, The Sultan is a hard act to match.

Wandering around the hotel's airy interiors, with their full-length shutter windows and tall columns, has the effect of transporting you back to a refined, bygone age. If you have a penchant for colonial heritage then you'll love staying here.
Let's face it, there are precious few Singapore hotels within this price bracket that could realistically claim to have truly spacious rooms. That being said, some of the accommodations here really are very limited indeed by the amount of square footage they offer. You have been warned.
Some rooms are located quite close to the hotel's late-night music venues. Stipulate your preference for a quiet room when booking if you're a light sleeper.
Whilst the above issues can be irksome, it's fair to say they're the only real negative aspects of note worth highlighting. As far as boutique four-star hotels go, The Sultan is certainly one of the better ones to choose in this part of Singapore.
