About Updown Cottage
Updown Cottage is a stunning and historic, 5* self catering cottage with space for 1-6 guests and a baby in a cot. Each window looks on to historic sights and spectacular views. It stands on one of the most famous and picturesque locations in Britain: Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, north Dorset which is under 2 hours to the south west of London by car or train (4 mile taxi ride from the station) and is within an easy 30-45 minute drive from such essential tourist sites as Stonehenge, Bath, Salisbury Cathedral, the Jurassic Coast, Corfe Castle, Durdle Door and numerous National Trust and English Heritage castles and stately homes. Gold Hill is renowned the world over as the 'picture of Britain', seen on so many tourist posters and calendars and was the location for Ridley Scott's 1970s 'Boy on a Bicycle' Hovis bread advert. Shaftesbury dates from the 9th century when King Alfred the Great founded the Abbey, the walls of which stand opposite Updown Cottage. The cottage dates from at least the 16th century but has been sympathically renovated and fastidiously maintained to provide the perfect blend of contemporary comforts and design but set amidst ancient beams and character. The cottage sleeps 6 in 2 double bedrooms and 2 single bedrooms with 3 bath / shower rooms. There are 2 sitting rooms - one with a massive inglenook fireplace with woodburning stove and the other with a baby grand piano. There is a very well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine and tumbledrier and a dining room leading to a terraced hillside garden with stunning views over miles and miles of perfect unspoilt English countryside. All beds are dressed with White Company Egyptian cotton bed linen and piles of towels and bathrobes are provided. Each bathroom is supplied with Bramley organic toiletries and the kitchen with a basket of groceries and 26 Nespresso capsules. Gold Hill is a quiet and secluded location and yet only a minute's walk to old English pubs, cafes, independent shops, museums and galleries. Parking is free and unrestricted on the lower section of the hill. The cottage is available to rent for the week, weekend or mid-week stay from £545 for a short break in the off season rising to £1395 for a week in high season.
